Humans are unique; we are all different, especially when it comes to skin types. Acne is a struggle that a lot of us have experienced at one point in our lives. This can bring about the question whether acne is more prone in certain skin complexions than others.

Acne is not created equal; there are many factors that cause acne such as:

  • Puberty
  • Genetics
  • Diet
  • Age
  • Exercise
  • The weather

Typically, once the cause of your breakouts is figured out, it gets easier to treat them. Most treatments for acne are the same, regardless of race, but it can vary depending on your skin tone.

Oily or Dry Skin?

It is important to identify the type of skin you have and understand what the proper skin regimen is in order to cater to that skin type.

Oily Skin

This skin type is coarser and often noticed with enlarged pores. The skin is oilier due to the overproduction of the sebaceous (oil-producing) glands. Your skin will seem shinier, especially on the forehead, down your nose and your chin. To take care of oily skin, the recommended treatment is a cleanser and a light moisturizer.

Oil is more visual against darker complexions, because darker skin tends to be thicker which gives the oil glands a more difficult task – leaving the skin dry. If pores are clogged with dead skin and oil, it can make treating breakouts more difficult. Clay masks are said to help with this common problem.

Dry Skin

This skin type is usually thin and delicate and prone to fine lines. A moisturizing regimen is recommended, but it is advised not to overdo it. All skin types can experience dryness, but it is more noticeable on darker complexions. For those with darker complexions, implement a weekly exfoliating routine with moisturizers.

Products that Can Cause Discolouration

Some products, if overused, can cause discolouration of the skin – especially on darker complexions. Here are products to stay away from:

  • Retinoid, Peroxides and Topical product use. Make sure to not use retinol and benzoyl peroxide at once. This can lead to skin dryness, peeling and discolouration.
  • Products with Alphahydroxy Acids (AHAs). This can remove the top layer of skin cells. However, because the results are intensive, be sure to only use small amounts, since larger amounts can lead to swelling and skin discolouration.

So, while acne affects everyone, they can be more noticeable and harder to treat for those with darker complexions.
