Acne is a condition millions of people struggle with throughout the world, each case as unique as the person experiencing it. Acne during any time of the year is an annoying occurrence, so here are a few ways you can deal with breakouts during the winter months.
Non-Drying Treatments
While you’ll find either benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid in a majority of acne treatments, it’s not the best thing to use during the colder months. It’ll dry out your skin and provoke any breakouts, as they are harsh ingredients. Instead, look for moisturizing gels that will help protect your skin while also treating any acne present. If you have an active breakout and need a quick fix, use a treatment that contains a small concentration of these ingredients.
Use Moisturizer
Now more than ever, your skin needs to be properly moisturized. Even if you experience oily skin, keep your skin hydrated. Drier weather can confuse the oil glands in your skin, which can lead to more breakouts. However, don’t go for a cream that’s too heavy if you’re prone to getting acne.
Use Sunscreen
This is particularly necessary if you live in a snowy climate. Wearing sunscreen during winter is important in protecting your skin from sun-induced inflammation. It’s worse than during the summer, as the sun reflects 80% of its rays off the snow. In comparison, sand and water in the summer months only reflect between 10 and 15% of sun rays.
Gentle Products Only
Avoid using exfoliating products with irritating particles or toners that are alcohol based. Gentler products won’t aggravate your skin, dry it out or cause it to breakout. Look for cleaners and scrubs that contain alpha hydroxy acids. It helps to get rid of surface build up, even out skin tone and prevents pores from getting clogged.
Drink Water
Your body needs to stay hydrated year-round, so make sure you’re drinking eight to ten glasses of water a day. Staying properly hydrated is one of the keys to obtaining clearer skin.
Change Pillowcases
Changing your pillowcase once a week is necessary for the treatment of acne. The oils in your hair and on your face rub against the pillow nightly, depositing it back onto your face. The bacteria present, especially if you’re already in the midst of a breakout, will settle into your skin and produce more acne. But not to worry, all you need to do is wash your pillowcases at least once a week.
Doxycycline
If you decide to take doxycycline to help treat your acne, is best to take the prescription medication during the winter. Doxycycline is known for increasing the user’s sensitivity to the suns rays. Depending on your location, the winter months may not be nearly as sunny and the best time to start this treatment. Talk to a dermatologist to see if this is the right option for you.
