This I Know for Now

Though the years have been full of a variety of ups and downs, they have taught me a multitude of things. One of my favourite little reads is Oprah’s “What I Know for Sure”, a book she wrote outlining her thoughts on some of life’s moments and lessons. I wanted to do something similar, to outline some of my experiences thus far on this journey we call entrepreneurship though it is ultimately, life.
Motivation: The biggest challenge in running a business is the need to keep oneself motivated on a daily basis, to be working towards your business and its goals. To do this it has helped me to remind myself of what it is I am trying to achieve and why. Keeping in mind my why has helped me on the trying days that are often present when you are creating something from scratch. My why really centres on freedom, passion, and creation. Freedom to lead my life on my terms, to be free to spend my time on my own endeavours and to be with people I choose to be with. Passion for the work you do is vital, as it is an attractor. And the notion of creation is a potent one as I believe we are here, on this earth, to create and there is a tremendous sense of freedom and satisfaction that comes from creating something born of one’s imagination. It also helps to remind myself that if it was easy, everyone would be doing it!
Persistence: With motivation comes the need for persistence. We live in a culture obsessed with perfection and instant gratification around success yet I believe that failure is necessary and ultimately leads to some level of success. I have tried and failed at many things over the last four years, but each failure led me closer to where the business needed to be. And I am okay with it as I have seen the progress. The only way through this is to persist, and know that success will come through trial and error and patience.
Guidance and mentors: Running a company can be lonely. As they say it is lonely at the top and it can be. This is why it is critical to seek out mentors and guidance through this process. I have been lucky to have worked with some great coaches over the last 2 years. My favourite saying is “You don’t know what you don’t know” – think about that! How true is that? If you are at the top, who are you accountable to? As a business owner you need to set yourself up with people who will hold you accountable and let you know what else is possible. So look for a mentor, coach or join a Mastermind. I have done all three and they have each served an important purpose over the years.
Sense of humour and laughter: Life is meant to be lived with purpose, joy, fun and a sense of humour! If we cannot laugh at life or ourselves, what is the point? Make sure each day has humour and laughter as both are good for the soul and for our overall well-being.
Good people: I have a background in Human Resources management so I believe the cornerstone of any good company is its people. I have strived to create an environment where people, both staff and clients, feel good in the space that I have created. This is not always easy but it is tremendously important to create. How? By being true to your values, vision and mission and communicating this to all. Communication, a physical feel and ambiance, as well as authenticity, are important notions to me and I have strived to use them in virtually all that I have created.
Alignment of values: One of my favourite people to listen to is Tony Robbins. He speaks of the need to align one’s values with the various aspects of your life. This can be true of relationships, work, almost anything we do on a daily basis. I have learned this as I have gotten older too. I find I don’t have the time or patience to deal with people and scenarios that do not align to what is important to me. As an example, learning to say no to an invite to an event that does not inspire me in the least. That decision serves me as I am being true to myself and my desire to spend my precious time on things I enjoy or with people I enjoy. Another example is letting go of people who do not serve you anymore. We can outgrow people and when that happens, we need to let them go. It’s ok, people come to us for a reason and when that has been served, cut the cord. Listen to your heart and be true to yourself.
True to your authentic self: This has become really important to me. I want to look in the mirror and know that I am serving myself daily with being the best possible person I can be. This means using my voice, saying no when it matters, living my values and morally, not listening to negativity or gossip. These are some of my examples of how I can strive daily to live with authenticity, and remembering the golden rule to treat others how I want to be treated.
Gratitude: This is one we cannot take for granted. I am grateful every day for the things I have in my life including the people, my health and just the opportunity to be alive. Every night before I go to sleep I say my thank you’s; this observation and practice has really changed my life.
Love: The biggest reason I am here is to be love. As the Beatles said, all you need is love! This belief has been an evolution but it is so important. I believe we are motivated by love or fear in all we do. Every day I aim to live by the question: is this action or decision love or fear based? Answering this question when contemplating an action or word, really helps to keep me centered, focused and in alignment with who I am.
I share these thoughts with you more as a personal cleansing and tribute to the last four years. I have learned a lot about myself and I plan to continue to do so. This business has served me on this journey and I am grateful every day for the blessings it has bestowed on me along with the many lessons.
I thank those of you who have been involved with my business over the last four years whether it be as clients, staff or suppliers, and look forward to continuing to do so over the next few years. There are more things I am embarking on including launching our online store www.myskinsalon.com and and evolving my alter ego “The Queen of Living Clean”; more to come on these!
Love and Light,
