April is Cancer awareness month. I felt compelled to spend some time thinking and writing about cancer as it is something that has affected me in relation to 3 people I know, who are my age, and who have all been diagnosed with various cancers in the last 6 months.
Cancer is a pain. For women going through cancer treatments feeling pretty is something fleeting. The thought of going to a spa or skin care clinic is not high on the agenda given this feeling and the perception that you can’t go to a spa when you are sick. In my opinion, this is when it is critical to take the time to pamper yourself, and a spa visit can help with how you look and feel.
Chemotherapy and radiation treatments take their toll on skin. Top issues for cancer patients include dehydration, itchiness, sun sensitivity, rashes/hives, inflammation, pigment issues and fragile skin. A skin care clinic such as ours can help to revitalize your skin using our organic skin care line from Whistler Naturals or iS Clinical, a line that is used at the Mayo Cancer Clinic exclusively on cancer patients. Products coupled with the human touch, holistic approach and our non-invasive technologies such as Bemer, Oxygen, LED light and Ultrasound will leave you feeling hydrated, refreshed and bright again.
As every client is different, every treatment is different. We customize your session based on what you are presenting with that day. You may benefit from our Oxylight Facial one visit, or a massage the next. Moving toxins out of your body through massage or a sauna session will help you feel better from the inside out. Chemotherapy, radiation and medication can build up in the hands and feet too, causing a lot of pain and discomfort so a massage can bring some relief of this.
Estheticians can be a wealth of information too when it comes to nutrition, lifestyle habits and de-stressing techniques. Our mandate is to improve the health and wellbeing of our clients through the skin but as we know great skin starts from within so this approach plays a role in helping you bring out your best and brightest skin. And ironically Aestheticians will often spend more time with their clients than their own doctors do.
If you are dealing with cancer, be sure to choose your home care products carefully looking for organic, non-toxic, and paraben free. Consult with an Aesthetician to see what is recommended. Suncare is also important so be sure to go chemical-free. We recommend Suntegrity from California which has a 1 rating on EWG’s objective Skin Deep Database.
There is a movement in the spa world to oncology aesthetics, something we will look into in the future. In the meantime, we are able to do a lot to help our clients feel cared for, soothed and de-stressed. If you are dealing with the effects of cancer treatments, book your complimentary assessment to see how we can help. This month we are featuring several service and product specials to bring to light services that can help treat the effects of cancer treatment.
